Project Accountant
Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales

About the Company
Join a high-technology engineering and defence contractor operating within a complex, multi-contract environment. This organisation manages long-term government contracts and supports commercial aviation customers through sophisticated simulation and mission electronics business units.

Role Description
This is an exceptional opportunity for a commercially focused Project Accountant who thrives at the intersection of finance and operations. Sitting between the finance team and two major business units, you will provide real-time financial visibility and strategic analysis to support sound decision-making. This is not a business as usual role; you will be a vital finance partner to project teams across Australia and the US, ensuring transparency throughout the full project lifecycle

This is a permanent, full-time position based at Sydney Olympic Park offering a competitive salary of up to $140k + super.

Key Responsibilities
  • Finance Business Partnering: Serve as a finance partner to business units, building trusted relationships with Project Managers to provide financial insight and challenge for commercial decision-making.
  • Project Cost Management: Own the end-to-end project accounting lifecycle, monitoring commitments, Estimate to Complete (ETC), and Estimate at Completion (EAC) against approved budgets.
  • Revenue & Billing: Manage milestone billing schedules in alignment with contract terms and ensure revenue recognition compliance with AASB 15 / IFRS 15.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the development of project budgets and rolling financial forecasts, identifying variances and escalating risks to leadership early.
  • Contract Compliance: Ensure financial management complies with internal policies and specific government defence contract frameworks, such as ASDEFCON.
  • Performance Reporting: Prepare monthly business unit reporting packs, providing clear analysis on trends, profitability, and project KPIs.
  • Governance & Controls: Maintain appropriate audit trails and manage intercompany transactions and cost allocations between Australian and international operations.

Qualifications & Skills

  • CA or CPA qualification is essential.

  • Relevant experience in project accounting, cost accounting, or finance business partnering.
  • Strong knowledge of project cost management, WBS structures, and EAC methodology.

  • Sound understanding of revenue recognition under AASB 15 / IFRS 15 for long-term contracts.

  • Demonstrated experience in a project-driven environment such as defence, aerospace, or complex engineering is strongly desirable.

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex data for non-finance stakeholders.

  • Must be an Australian Citizen.
